Weekly competitions are arranged on Wednesdays on both the Cathedral course and the Tower course.
Competitions on the Cathedral course (Vets competitions) have no playing handicap limit, but for scoring purposes a cap of 36 is applied for most competitions, excluding team games, and a cap of 32 for Trophy competitions.
Competitions on the Tower course (Tower Vets competitions) are open to players who are 75 years of age or over, or who have a playing handicap of 28 or more. There are no handicap caps or limits for Tower Vets.
Entry to all competitions is via the HowDidiDo booking system. You can book into a competition up to mid-day on the Monday prior to the event. Playing partners are chosen at random by the competition organiser.
After the round, you and your marker must check scores and sign your scorecards. You should then enter your gross scores either into your mobile phone (HowDidiDo app) or into the clubhouse terminal. Please check that all the entered hole scores match your scorecard. Scorecards should be handed in to the day's Scorers as soon as possible. You are then encouraged to gather in the clubhouse to enjoy a chat and a drink and a lie or two while you wait for the results and the handing out of prizes.
There are some restrictions on prizes:
No player can win any Major Trophy competition if he has not competed in three of our competitions in the nine months prior to the date of the event. Instead he will be placed in 2nd position.
New members with newly-established handicaps are generally restricted from winning prizes in their first three competitions.
All individual qualifying competitions played from the yellow tees will be included in Eclectic competitions (one for Vets and one for Tower Vets, with both summer and winter competitions). All players are automatically entered into these competitions, which record your lowest gross score for each of the 18 holes. Immediately after the final competition of the season, your total gross score is reduced by half of your current course handicap (rounded) and the winners are announced.
There are also Order of Merit competitions (one for Vets and one for Tower Vets, but only in the summer season). Points are awarded to those players finishing in the top 10 of the Wednesday competitions (stableford and medal competitions). Points accumulated determine the overall winners.
The results of the weekly competitions and the current status of the Eclectic and Order of Merit competitions are published on HowDidIDo (excluding team games) and on this web site.
Full details of the organisation and rules for all our competitions are available in the Members Handbook.
